How Do You Ready Your Practice for the Future?

The American Cancer Society (ACS) estimated that roughly 1.7 million new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the U.S. in 2017, and the impact to patients for out-of-pocket costs reached nearly $4 billion.1 The spend has government agencies and payers considering models to contain the costs. The Quality Payment Program and MIPS (Merit-based Incentive Payment System) reporting are continually being discussed, but reimbursement for high-quality, cost-effective care – even by commercial payers – is here to stay. Value is the model for the future.

Practices need to be prepared for the future. Considering a practice redesign does not mean your practice’s processes are incorrect or you are not providing a high level of care. An opportunity to assess your current practice workflows against the standards and recommendations of a value-based care model provides an opportunity to prepare and improve your care delivery model.

How do you ready your practice? It sometimes takes that outside look to see where you can make adjustments. For example, a patient is experiencing effects from treatment and needs to be seen that day. An objective assessment may be able to provide feedback to you to enhance the access to care in your practice. One option may be to create time available in each Advanced Practice Provider’s schedule for same day/walk-in patient visits. By blocking out the schedule and improving access to care, you may be helping patients to avoid ED visits and/or hospitalizations.
